Scratch outage statistics
If the editor just spins and never opens, start with the basics: hard-refresh the page (Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows, Cmd+Shift+R on Mac), then clear the browser cache. Scratch runs entirely on WebGL and JavaScript, so a bloated cache or an outdated browser version is the most common culprit. Chrome 90+ or Firefox 88+ work best — if you''re on an older build, update it.
This usually means the connection to the Scratch server dropped mid-session. Check your internet — even a brief hiccup breaks the save handshake. If you''re online but saves still fail, log out and back in, then try saving again. As a safety net, always export a local copy (File → Save to your computer) before closing the tab.
- Make sure the file is under 10 MB — the platform silently rejects anything larger
- Supported formats are PNG, JPG, SVG, and GIF; WebP and HEIC won''t upload
- If the file size and format are fine, try a different browser — Safari sometimes blocks the upload dialog
- Disable browser extensions one by one; ad blockers occasionally intercept the upload request
Projects with hundreds of sprites and sounds push the browser''s memory hard. Close unused tabs, restart the browser, and reopen the project. If freezing is chronic, break the project into smaller pieces using backpack or cloud variables to share data between them.
Double-check that Caps Lock is off — passwords are case-sensitive. If you''re certain the credentials are correct but login fails, use the ''Forgot your password?'' link on the sign-in page. The reset email sometimes lands in spam, so check there too. New accounts also require email confirmation before the first login works.
Browsers block autoplay by default. Click anywhere inside the editor first, then run the project — that user interaction unlocks audio. If sounds are distorted, the source file is likely a high-bitrate MP3; convert it to 128 kbps before uploading.
